Organizations often hesitate to move all their processes to the cloud due to concerns such as data security, compliance, and performance. This is where SAP Edge Integration Cell (EIC) comes into play. EIC provides great convenience as a hybrid solution that enables cloud-based integration processes to run within on-premise systems. By combining the flexibility of the cloud with the control of on-premise infrastructure, it directly addresses critical needs such as data security and performance.
• Data sovereignty and security: Prevents sensitive internal company data from being exposed to the cloud. With EIC, the design is done in the cloud, while execution is carried out on-premise. • Low latency and high performance: Running critical processes locally ensures low latency and high performance. • Modern transition from SAP PI/PO: Facilitates the transition from outdated SAP PO systems, which will be out of maintenance in 2027, to a modern system. Provides a practical and up-to-date solution. • Continued operation without internet connection: Integration processes continue to function even if the connection is lost.
Edge Integration Cell operates in a Kubernetes-based Docker environment. The core components of EIC consist of: • Integration Runtime: The main component that executes integration flows. • Edge Lifecycle Management: Manages the lifecycle of applications and configurations. • Security Layer: Includes advanced security measures such as mTLS encryption, certificate-based authentication, and access policy management. • Infrastructure Services: Services such as Redis, PostgreSQL, and Solace support functions like messaging, data storage, and caching.
Additionally, EIC comes with an RFC adapter component for direct integration with SAP systems. This eliminates the need for a Cloud Connector and allows backend system integration. This direct connection simplifies the integration process while also enhancing performance.
SAP Process Orchestration (PO) will no longer be supported after 2027. Therefore, companies currently using PO are turning to new solutions to modernize their integration structure. At this point, EIC emerges as the most significant candidate.
To facilitate the transition from PO to EIC, SAP provides: • Assessment tools that analyze existing iFlows, • Alternative scenario suggestions for incompatible adapters, • Guide documents for the migration process.
This enables the transition process to be carried out in a more planned, fast, and controlled manner.
SAP positions Edge Integration Cell as one of the hybrid integration platforms of the future and continues its development rapidly. Upcoming innovations include: • Support for new adapters: Easier integration with non-SAP systems. • Stronger support for CI/CD processes: Development of automation and version control solutions. • Enhanced monitoring dashboards: More powerful analytic dashboards to be offered both locally and centrally. • Simplified installation: Wizard-based installation tools to help enterprise IT teams onboard faster.
SAP’s investment in this product shows that EIC will continue to be positioned as a strategic solution in the long term.
SAP Edge Integration Cell offers a comprehensive and modern solution to meet the growing demands for data sovereignty, security, management, and performance.
In summary, EIC is:
All organizations operating within the SAP ecosystem would greatly benefit from considering EIC while determining their integration strategies.
