Today I want to talk a bit about the future of SAP EWM. What are the exciting trends in this industry? What is the state of SAP EWM right now, and what are the expectations for SAP EWM?
But first, let's briefly introduce SAP EWM for those who are not familiar with SAP EWM.
Table of Contents
SAP Extended Warehouse Management (SAP EWM) is a warehouse management system offering automated and integrated ERP, WMS and SCM operational processes. It is a total supply chain solution that integrates with the SAP ERP core.
The software basically manages every task involved in getting goods to the customer, from order taking to calculating inventory, shipping and more. EWM offers a modern system landscape that utilizes data from Production Planning and Replenishment (PPS), Warehouse Management (WM) and Warehouse Execution (WEX), as well as other SAP systems. Users can get a complete overview of a company's warehousing, fulfillment, transportation and logistics processes all in one screen – optimizing performance, cost-efficiency and customer service.
Now, we discuss the difference between SAP WM and SAP EWM. We point out that SAP EWM is the most flexible and often preferred solution from most customers. This is because of its advantages over the SAP WM product in this market. In addition, for medium to large companies where software is integrated into business processes or for large departments with complex supply chains, SAP EWM is a better choice than SAP WM for central purchase orders with master data.
According to SAP's future roadmap, the development activities for the WM module have ended and there will be no more updates. On 2025, support for WM will end. For this reason, lots of companies are migrating from SAP WM to SAP EWM.
SAP EWM was launched in 2005 as an add-on for SAP ERP and it is based on the warehouse management system from the mySAP Business Suite. Over time, with SAP's innovation strategy, this solution has been enriched with new functions, such as extended material flow control and yard management in EWM 9.3.
SAP EWM plays a key role in industry 4.0 and it is used by almost all SAP customers who need advanced warehousing management solutions.
If you implement a new system or migrate to a more recent version of EWM, the first step is to choose the right template provided by SAP. It is possible to start from scratch but this option may lead to longer implementation times and higher costs because you need to perform a lot of customizations.
Depending on your business requirements, you can choose between three different types of templates: standard, lean or lean with extended warehouse management (EWM) functionality.
The future of SAP EWM is in IoT. The Internet of Things will change the way we manage our warehouse inventory. I'm not talking about any old labels or RFID here yet. What I'm talking about is the complete integration of your SAP ERP, Warehouse Management and Retail software systems into one seamless system powered by IoT. There are many things you can do to prepare for this transition today.
