Task interleaving is an advanced strategy to optimize internal warehouse movements. It can be used both in goods receipt and goods removal. It is interleaving or combining different warehouse tasks on a single trip in a warehouse. An employee can perform putaway and picking in one trip instead of performing in two trips. In this way, deadheading (forklift being empty while an employee is driving) can be reduced.
As an example, an employee performs putaway to storage bins after taking goods from the staging area but does not return empty-handed to the staging area immediately after putaway. Employee performs picking from storage bins and returns to a staging area. So, an employee performs something on the round trip. In other words, this is combining picking and put away in the same area. In this way different warehouse tasks are carried out as a single trip.
Another explanation of task interleaving is to combine putaway and picking queues in one zone where both activity zones are in the same location physically in the RF environment. It is important to match proper and related warehouse tasks. Distance between desired goods and priorities of warehouse tasks need to be considered for combining.
